Here at Kithbrooke we absolutely love our Lawn Bowls!
With 8 Championship bowling rinks, there’s space for everyone, regardless of skill level.
The origin of this great sport is all the way back in Ancient Egypt, and swept its way through England from the 13th century with rises and falls in popularity. Settlers from Europe brought the game over to Australia, with the first green laid on the beach alongside The Sandy Hotel in Tasmania in 1844. (Though the first recorded game wasn’t until 1845!) The first bowls club in Australia was also established here, though it was disbanded in 1853.
The oldest bowls club in Australia is the Melbourne Bowls Club, founded in 1864 and still going strong. Closer to home, Torquay Bowls Club is one of the strongest clubs in Victoria, with 600 odd members, and a ‘Lighthouse Club’ acknowledgement.
With such a rich history of the sport so locally, it’s no wonder we love it at Kithbrooke! We play twice a week on Mondays and Fridays, and all are welcome. Join us, and see what the fuss is all about.
